Data Deletion
How to delete your data in Spread
Last updated: August 3, 2026
Spread has been discontinued. The app is no longer available and the web app has been taken down, so the in-app steps described below can no longer be used. Email privacy@spreadapp.co with the subject line "Delete my account" and your data will be deleted within 30 days. The rest of this page is kept for reference, and describes how deletion worked inside the app.
Spread ("we," "us"), published by Spread, LLC, gives you control over the information associated with your account. There are two ways to remove data:
- Delete individual items yourself in the app, without closing your account.
- Request full deletion of your account and everything tied to it by emailing us.
The app also has a "Delete account" button. It is important to understand exactly what that button does and does not remove, so this page spells it out below.
1. Delete specific data yourself
You do not need to delete your account to remove individual items. In the Spread app you can:
- Allergens and severities — Profile → Allergy Profile. Remove any allergen (standard or custom) and save. Removed allergens are deleted from our database.
- Recipes you created — open your recipe, tap Edit, then Delete recipe. The recipe is removed from your library and from search. If the recipe has already been added to an event or saved by another user, it stays visible in those places for their safety, and the app tells you so before you confirm.
- Saved recipes (bookmarks) — unsave a recipe from the recipe screen. The bookmark is deleted.
- Profile details and photo — Profile tab. Change your display name, location, and avatar photo at any time.
- Your RSVP and note to a host — reopen the RSVP for an event to change your response (including to "Not going") or to edit the note you sent the host.
- Dishes you added to an event — open the event and remove the dish.
- Household member allergens — Profile → Household. Edit or remove any allergen on a household member's profile.
Not yet self-service. A few things cannot currently be deleted from inside the app: reaction journal entries (you can edit them, but not delete individual entries), events you host, and household members themselves. To remove any of these, email us at privacy@spreadapp.co and we will delete them for you. We are working on making all three self-service in the app.
2. What the in-app "Delete account" button does
In the app, the Profile tab has a Delete account option at the bottom of the screen. (It is on the Profile tab itself, not inside Settings.) When you confirm it, the app immediately and permanently:
- Deletes your entire allergy profile — every allergen, severity, and sharing setting.
- Deletes every reaction journal entry — symptoms, severity, onset, suspected triggers, and notes.
- Anonymizes your profile — your display name is replaced with "Spread User," and your avatar, location, and app preferences are cleared.
- Signs you out.
This removes your sensitive health information right away, which is the most important part. But it is not a complete erasure. The following are not removed by that button:
- Recipes you created.
- Events you hosted, and the dishes and guest lists on them.
- Your RSVPs and any notes you sent hosts.
- Household members you added.
- Your saved recipes.
- Photos you uploaded (avatar, recipe photos, reaction photos) in our file storage.
- Your sign-in record, including your email address. Your login still exists, so you could sign back in to an emptied, anonymized account.
If you want everything gone, including your email address and login, use the email request in Section 3. We will complete the rest by hand.
3. Request full deletion of your account and data
To have your account and all associated data removed:
- Email privacy@spreadapp.co from the email address on your account.
- Use the subject line "Delete my account."
- We verify that the request comes from the account owner, then delete your data and your sign-in record.
We complete verified deletion requests within 30 days and will email you to confirm when it is done. You do not need to use the in-app button first, and you do not need to give a reason.
If you would like a copy of your data before it is deleted, ask for it in the same email and we will send it in a reasonable format.
4. What is deleted, and by which method
| Data | In-app "Delete account" | Email request |
|---|---|---|
| Allergy profile and custom allergens | Deleted | Deleted |
| Reaction journal entries | Deleted | Deleted |
| Profile name, location, avatar | Cleared and anonymized to "Spread User" | Deleted |
| Recipes you created | Kept | Deleted |
| Events you hosted, dishes, guest lists | Kept | Deleted or anonymized (see Section 5) |
| Your RSVPs and notes to hosts | Kept | Deleted |
| Household members and their allergen profiles | Kept | Deleted |
| Saved recipes (bookmarks) | Kept | Deleted |
| Uploaded photos (avatar, recipe, reaction) | Kept in storage | Deleted |
| Sign-in record and email address | Kept | Deleted |
5. What may remain after deletion
A few things cannot be fully unwound, and we would rather tell you plainly than imply otherwise:
- Shared events. An event you hosted or attended continues to exist for the other people who were part of it. We remove your identifying information from it, but we do not delete other people's event records.
- Information already seen by others. Allergen information you chose to share with a host of a past event may persist in that host's event records in anonymized form.
- Community contributions. Allergen tag reports you submitted may be retained without your identity, because they are used to correct the shared ingredient database.
- Recipes in use. If a recipe you created was added to someone else's event or saved by another user, it remains visible to them, without your name attached.
6. Retention
When data is deleted, it is removed from our active systems (Supabase, our database and file storage provider) within 30 days. Encrypted backups may retain a copy for a limited additional period, typically up to 90 days in total, before being purged on their normal rotation.
Crash and error reports held by our error-reporting provider (Sentry) are retained separately and are not linked to your profile content. These reports never contain your allergens, reaction journal entries, recipes, or events.
We may retain a minimal record where the law requires it. Where we do, we keep only what is required and for no longer than required.
For the full picture of what we collect and why, see our Privacy Policy.
